What Leadership Truly Means!

While browsing through a magazine, I read this interesting article regarding leadership...here’s what it says:

“Remember what leadership truly means. It’s not just handling a group or meeting a business objective...it’s Inspiring...Motivating...and Being the Kind of Person that People Can Look Up To.
Don’t make decisions based on personal preferences. “She’s my friend, so I’ll promote her and fire him.” Then you’re not being a leader...you’re just a fool with more authority than you deserve.

When you’re in charge of a team, you manage both objectives and the work conditions of your staff. Part of your job is watching for burn-out and low morale. Sometimes it’s better to take short-term hit in revenue to protect long-term interests...the Well-being and Satisfaction of your Best People.

Don’t insult or threaten. Everyone deserves Respect...and you get better results if you have the loyalty and trust of your staff and peers. Nobody wants to be reprimanded in public, it diminishes self-esteem. Praise in public, reprimand in private. But to be effective, praise must be Specific. “That was a very well-researched report” not only affirms their hard work but gives clear directions to everyone what kind of work you expect. You also avoid any suspicion of playing favourites since your praise is based on concrete performance and not personal preferences.

Walk The Talk! We tell children not to lie, hit, steal or bully other kids...and then we do the same thing at work? Stealing an account is no more ethical than stealing a toy from the store...even if it’s under the corporate guise of “being aggressive”. Backbiting a co-worker or playing dirty politics just to get someone’s job is even less immature than hitting a classmate in a playground...because you should know better, you’re supposed to be an adult.

The bottom line is...
"Work as if the people you care for or your kids are watching you.
Do nothing that will make them be ashamed of you.
You may be managing total strangers...
but you are also setting an example to the people you love.”
